How to Make Your Screen Smaller

Depending on what you mean by "make the screen smaller", the fix is different: change the display resolution, zoom out in the browser, or simply resize the window. Here is how to do each one.

Make Everything Smaller on Windows

If icons, text and windows all look too big, change the display scale:

  1. Right-click the desktop and choose Display settings.
  2. Under Scale, choose a smaller percentage (e.g. 100% instead of 150%).
  3. Under Display resolution, choose a higher resolution for sharper, smaller content.

Tip: a higher resolution makes everything smaller but sharper; a lower scale does the same while keeping the resolution.

Make Everything Smaller on Mac

  1. Open System Settings → Displays.
  2. Under Resolution, choose Scaled and pick a "More Space" option.
  3. More Space shrinks text and icons so more fits on screen.

Zoom Out in Your Browser

To make just the website smaller (without changing system settings):

  • Press Ctrl + Minus (Windows/Linux) or Cmd + Minus (Mac) to zoom out.
  • Press Ctrl + 0 or Cmd + 0 to reset back to 100%.
  • Or use the browser menu → Zoom → Zoom out.

This only changes the current page's size — your screen resolution stays the same.

Resize or Minimize a Window

If you want a smaller window rather than a smaller screen:

  • Drag the edge or corner of the window inward.
  • Use Minimize (the – button) to hide the window to the taskbar.
  • On Windows, Win + Down Arrow minimizes, Win + Up Arrow maximizes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I reduce the screen size on my computer?
Either lower the display scale (Windows: Display settings → Scale; Mac: Displays → Scaled → More Space), increase the resolution, or zoom out in the browser with Ctrl/Cmd + Minus.
How do I make the text on my screen smaller?
Zoom out in the browser (Ctrl/Cmd + Minus), or lower the system text size / display scale in the operating system settings.
Why is everything on my screen so big?
Most likely the display scaling is set above 100% (e.g. 150%) or the resolution is set lower than the monitor's native resolution. Check Display settings and set the recommended (native) resolution.
